NETHERLANDS: Exit Polls Point To Centre-Left Win & Big Gains For Wilders' PVV

NETHERLANDS

Exit polling from the 6 June election in the Netherlands for the  European Parliament shows the centre-left alliance between the environmentalist GreenLeft (GL) and the social democratic Labour Party (PvdA) on course to secure a plurality of Dutch seats, with Ipsos-I&O projecting the parties to take eight seats. This is down from the combined nine won in 2019 when they ran as separate parties (six PvdA, three GL). The right-wing nationalist Party for Freedom (PVV) of Geert Wilders looks to have secured second place, with a projected seven seats, up from just one in the 2019 election.

  • The final results will not come through until the evening of Sunday 9 June, when the final polling stations close in Italy - the last EU member state to conclude voting in the EP elections. • A likely strong result for the PVV provides a boost to the far-right nationalist Identity and Democracy (ID) group in the EP as it seeks to garner a greater share of funding and senior committee positions (which comes with greater seat numbers) as well as potentially push for a right-wing alliance with the ECR group.
  • Domestically, it could also bolster Wilders' position as primus inter pares among party leaders in the four-party gov't set to be formed in the coming weeks under incoming PM Dick Schoof.
