No Atlantic Hurricanes in Short Term Forecasts as Season Starts

The Atlantic hurricane basin is quiet at present now the typical season started June 1, while no tropical activity is expected in at least the next seven days according to the National Hurricane Center.

  • A number of forecasters predict this could be one of the busiest on record.
  • AccuWeather: is expecting 20 to 25 named storms, with eight to 12 becoming hurricanes and four to seven turning into major hurricanes classified as Category 3 or stronger, with top sustained winds of 111 mph or higher.
  • Climate Prediction Center: The agency has predicted 17 to 25 named storms forming in the Atlantic hurricane basin this year, with eight to 13 of those turning into hurricanes. Of those hurricanes, the forecasters believe four to seven will strengthen into major hurricanes.
  • Colorado State University: predicts 23 named storms, 11 of those becoming hurricanes and five reaching major hurricane strength.
  • NY NJ PA Weather: forecasts conditions will be favorable for 20 named storms, with 12 of those strengthening into hurricanes and six becoming major hurricanes.
  • Weatherworks: predicting 19 to 23 named storms, including nine to 13 hurricanes, with four to six becoming major ones.
