Norwegian Hydro Stocks Widen Surplus to 5-year Average

Norwegian hydropower reserves last week increased by 1.80 percentage points to 84.6% of capacity as of the end o last week, further widening the surplus to the five-year average, NVE data showed.

  • Stocks slowed the weekly increase from 3.9 points a week earlier, weighed on by higher hydropower output on the week.
  • The surplus to the five-year average widened to 7.09 percentage points, compared with 6.64 points the week prior and the highest surplus s far this this year.
  • Hydropower generation in Norway last week increased. Output from hydro reservoirs rose by 771MW on the week to 10.69GW. Onshore wind and gas output dipped slightly on the week, Entso-E data showed.
  • Forecasts suggest precipitation in the hydro-intensive Vestland region this week which could support inflows into reserves.
