Oil Holding Gains amid US SPR Re-stock and Middle East Tension

Crude is holding most of its gains during the day, as the US announcement that it will further refill the SPR, coupled with widening Middle East tension, have supported prices.

  • WTI FEB 24 up 3.2% at 72.6$/bbl
  • WTI-Brent unchanged at -5.24$/bbl
  • WTI FEB 24-MAR 24 up 0.05$/bbl at -0.19$/bbl
  • WTI MAR 24-APR 24 up 0.05$/bbl at -0.15$/bbl
  • The US is seeking up to 3 bbl of sour crude for the strategic petroleum reserve, according to a notice by the US Department of Energy. The 3m bbl will be delivered to the Big Hil SPR site between April 1-30 2023.
  • A terrorist attack near the grave site of Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani in the central Iranian city of Kerman had added to tensions in the Middle East.
  • The Houthi rebels have fired three missiles a Malta-flagged boxship near its port quarter, according to reports from security firm Ambrey, which is likely the CMA CGM Tage, ship tracking data showed.
