Oil Leak at Pemex Drilling Platform Before Fire

The Pemex Akal-B oil drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico which caught fire on April 6 had been leaking oil according to Mexican Center for Environmental Rights, or CEMDA.

  • “Satellite images have detected the existence of an ongoing oil spill in the same area of the accident,” organizations led by CEMDA said in the statement.
  • The oil spill began around March 22 until at least April 9 and has covered an area of around 390 square kilometers.
  • Mexico’s Pemex lost 20,000 bpd in production after the fire according to Reuters earlier this week.
