OIL: STS Transfers of Russian Oil Relocate After Greek Restrictions: Kpler

OIL

Ship-to-ship transfers of Russian oil are relocating to new regions in response to Greece's crackdown on oil transfer activities in the Laconian Gulf, according to Kpler.

  • Global oil logistics have shifted with emerging hotspots for ship-to-ship transfers including Malta, Italy, and Western Africa.
  • Transfer volumes are stabilising as vessels adjust to new regulatory environment, despite a 40% drop in cargo volumes since the implementation of Greek restrictions.
  • Greek authorities implemented stringent measures to curb illegal and risky oil transfer activities which posed environmental and security threats.
  • The shift reflects the resilience and adaptability of maritime logistics with 85% of the total leaving the Hellenic exclusive economic zone for new locations.
  • There were 122 STS transfers recorded in various regions from May 1 to August 1 with 44% near Malta, 9% near Augusta, Sicily and 7% near Lome, Togo.
