Opaque Tanker Activity Declines in Second Half of Year

Opaque tanker market activity peaked in Q2 supporting 4-year high exports but has since declined – signalling a slowdown according to Vortexa.

  • The vessel tracking firm counted 1070 tankers which carried Iranian, Russian and Venezuelan crude/condensate, DPP & CPP in Q2 – a 500% increase y/y.
  • Russian crude and product tankers account for 80% of all of Q2 activity. Opaque tanker activity declined 10% in Q3 q/q due to weaker Iranian exports and Russian crude and CPP over this period.
  • Q4 activity shows a further slowdown.
