Opposition Takes Narrow Lead In Preliminary Vote Count

SWEDEN

The centre-right opposition bloc has taken the lead in Sweden's parliamentary elections, with votes from 5,557 out of 6,578 electoral districts counted, even as PM Andersson's coalition held a narrow lead in the exit polls.

  • The bloc led by Andersson is poised to take 174 seats in the 349-strong Riksdag, according to early data from Sweden't Election Authority, falling short of simple majority.
  • The opposition's score has been boosted by an unexpectedly strong showing from the right-wing populist Sweden Democrats, who have long been placed under a cordon sanitaire by mainstream parties.
  • As things stand, the Sweden Democrats are projected to become the second-largest party in the Riksdag, which would make them critically important in forming the new government, should the opposition bloc hold the lead.
  • Note that when this is being typed, the election remains too close to call.
