Pakistan Electoral Commission Announces Senate Elections For 3 March

ASIA

Pakistan's Electoral Commission has announced that elections for 48 of the 104 seats in the upper house of parliament, the Senate, will take place on 3 March.

  • At present the governing coalition of Prime Minister Imran Khan does not hold a majority in the Senate. The main opposition Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) has 18 seats up for election, while its ally the Pakistan People's Party has 8 seats up.
  • Senate elections are held indirectly, with national regional assemblies voting for senators.
  • Should Khan's PTI and its allies be able to secure a majority in the Senate, it would present a clearer path for enacting policies until the next general election due in 2023.
