Pandemic Reopening Categories Continued To Deflate In July

US DATA

The key pandemic reopening-related categories saw declines across the board in July, for the 2nd consecutive month.

  • As noted earlier: airfares had been seen between -4% to +2.5% by sell-side analysts vs the -8.1% M/M drag in June - they fell AGAIN by -8.1% in July. The index of Airfare prices is now 10% below where it was in Feb 2020.
  • Used car prices fell the most since February, -1.3% M/M (-0.5% prior), perhaps less deflationary than most had expected, with new cars showing deflation for the 4th consecutive month (-0.1% vs -0.2% prior).
  • Car/Truck rental price deflation slowed to -0.3% M/M (-1.4% prior), but it was the 6th consecutive monthly decline.
  • Lodging prices were slightly less deflationary than in June, as had been expected: they fell 0.5% M/M (-2.3% prior).
