Pending Home Sales Beat But From Lowest Reading In Series History

  • Pending home sales surprisingly increased a seasonally adjusted 4.8% M/M in June (cons 1.4) as they chipped away at two larger than expected declines in April (-7.7%) and May (-1.9% revised from -2.1 last month).
  • Gains were seen across the main regions, ranging from 3.0% for the northeast to 6.3% for south (easily the largest region for existing home sales).
  • After some unusual divergence with the existing home sales data, which pending are meant to lead by 1-2 months, the two series are more in keeping again.
  • They continue to imply sales running 25-30% below pre-pandemic averages, with May still seeing a record low for a series going back to 2001.
