Philippine Leaders Record Double-Digit Drops In Approval Ratings

PHILIPPINES

The Philippines' ruling Marcos-Duterte tandem recorded a notable slump in their approval ratings, with the erosion in their support attributed to the developments in the West Philippine Sea, higher commodity prices and controversial legislative proposals.

  • The Pulse Asia Survey (September 10 - 14) showed that President Ferdinand Macros Jr's approval rating fell 15pp to 65% from 80% recorded in June, while Vice President Sara Duterte recorded an 11-point drop to 73% from 84%.
  • Pulse Asia noted that "continuing increase in prices of basic commodities and services and unfulfilled promise of reducing these" contributed to the "significant" drop in approval ratings.
  • However, despite double-digit declines in their levels of support, the two leaders "continue to enjoy majority approval scores at the national level and across geographic areas and socio-economic classes".
