PM Sceptical On Gas Price Cap Effectiveness

NORWAY

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere has stated that he is sceptical as to the effectiveness of a cap on gas prices in solving Europe's energy crisis. Following a call earlier today with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Stoere issued a statement saying that "We're going into the talks with an open mind but are sceptical towards a maximum price on natural gas. A maximum price would not solve the fundamental problem, which is that there is too little gas in Europe....We've agreed to an even closer dialogue with the EU regarding the proposals that are on the table,"

  • Since the decline in gas supplies from Russia following the war in Ukraine and halt to Nord Stream I flows, Norway has become the primary supplier of natural gas to Europe.
  • This statement is the latest in a series from the PM seeking to discourage the EU from implementing some form of price cap.
