Poland Estimates Nuclear Power Plant Build Cost at €26bn

The estimated cost of building a nuclear power plant in Poland is estimated at zloty 115bn (€26.4bn), with the operating cost set at zloty 35bn, government plenipotentiary for energy infrastructure Maciej Bando said, cited by ISB News.

  • The government plans to finance the investment through a 30% equity and 70% debt capital strategy, with the upper limit of equity capacity set at zloty 60bn, according to Bando.
  • The 70% of debt will be gained on the international and domestic markets, with one of the main contributors being EXIM Bank, Bando added,
  • But the construction of roads and railway lines must be completed by 2028, at an additional cost of zloty 5bn, according to the government,
  • This is crucial for Poland to meet its deadline of installing its first nuclear power plant, which is expected to be commissioned in 2033, according to the International Atomic Agency.
  • Poland is looking to install a 1-1.6GW nuclear power plant, with further reactors installed every 2-3 years up to a total of six, according to the World Nuclear Association.
