POLAND: Opposition Parties Complete Merger, Current Account & Trade Balance Eyed

POLAND
  • The main opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party announced its expected merger with its partners from Sovereign Poland (SP). The latter started off as PiS's breakaway faction but the two parties then resumed co-operation, with SP candidates contesting parliamentary elections from PiS's lists. The merger was announced during PiS's congress, which saw party leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski call for the consolidation of the "patriotic camp."
  • Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski dodged questions about his ambitions to run in next year's presidential election and said that the ruling Civic Coalition (KO) will wait with unveiling its candidate until it becomes clear who will represent the opposition. As things stand, Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski still seems to be the most likely candidate of KO.
  • The parliamentary Constitutional Accountability Committee (ODK) will hold its second closed-doors meeting tomorrow as its probe into the conduct of the NBP Governor continues. The panel is planning to summon five more witnesses.
  • Poland's August current account balance and trade balance will hit the wires at 13:00BST/14:00CEST. Consensus looks for a trade deficit of EUR1.305bn and current account deficit of EUR929mn.
