Polish Gov't Attempting To Get Support In Warsaw For EU Budget: FT

EU PRESS

Mehreen Khan at the FT tweets:

  • "EU is cooking up an interpretative declaration for Hungary and Poland on the rule of law mechanism. It would insists the mechanism applies to the new budget, judicial recourse at ECJ and mention an the emergency brake for the process."
  • "Poland's deputy PM - a moderate in the gov - has said there is an agreement. But diplomats in Brussels say there is a hold up as Warsaw is attempting to convince its smaller hard line party that has rejected the ROL mechanism."
  • "As for Orban, his "chances of winning" comments last night reflect that Budapest has been actively involved in the contents of the declaration and how it can be spun as a victory for Hungary."
  • Should these comments from Khan be accurate, the Law and Justice party may find itself in some trouble domestically. In the likelihood that the 'smaller hard line party' mentioned is the United Poland party, there have already been tensions evident between them and the gov't in recent months over an animal rights bill that has threatened the majority of the 'United Right' coaliton led by the right-wing Law and Justice party.
