Trump Defence Team Begins Presenting Its Case 1200ET Today

Confirmed that the defence team for former President Donald Trump in the Senate trial for his conviction following impeachment will open its arguments at 1200ET (1700GMT, 1800CET) today.

  • Significant focus on the nature of the arguments. The House impeachment managers are widely viewed to have presented a compelling case in recent days calling for Trump's conviction. This stands in contrast to the initial presentation made by one of Trump's lawyers, Bruce Castor, who was derided as delivering a rambling and incoherent argument calling for the trial to be deemed unconstitutional.
  • The fact remains that a conviction remains extremely unlikely. With only six Republican senators voting with the Democrats early in the week to confirm the trial as constitutional, raising this number to the required 17 to secure conviction is set to prove a bridge too far for the House impeachment managers.
