Poll-Public Prefers Delay To NATO Membership Rather Than Bending Laws

SWEDEN

Latest opinion polling from Sweden shows that the public would rather see the country's accession to NATO delayed rather than potentially bending the country's laws in order to accommodate Turkish demands regarding the extradition of Kurdish dissidents.

  • The Dagens Nyheter/Ipsos poll showed just 10% of respondents in favour of the gov't of PM Ulf Kristersson ensuring that "Sweden must join NATO as soon as possible even if that entails legal compromises".
  • This contrasts to the 79% of respondents that sided with the statement saying that "Sweden must stand up for its legal principles even if that delays joining NATO".
  • Ankara continues to block both Sweden and Finland's NATO accession plans due to the refusal of Sweden to extradite individuals that it claims are terrorists. The Swedish Supreme Court ruled in December 2022 against the extradition of a Turkish national the gov't of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan claimed was involved in the failed 2016 coup against Erdogan.
  • Despite the groundswell against bending laws in order to join, overall Swedish support for joining NATO sits at record highs, coming in at 60% in the poll.
