Poll: Strong Support For Traffic Light Coalition, Scholz As Chancellor

GERMANY

Latest opinion poll from FGW shows strong support for a SPD-Green-FDP governing coalition led by Social Democrat Olaf Scholz. The environmentalist Greens and pro-business liberal Free Democrats (FDP) - seen as the likely kingmakers in most coalition scenarios - remain engaged in talks to find agreement between one another before talking to the larger parties.

  • Coalition poll : Opinion about each coalition: Good - Bad :
    • SPD-Green-FDP (traffic light) : 59 % - 20 %
    • CDU/CSU-Green-FDP (Jamaica) : 24 % - 62 %
    • SPD-CDU/CSU (grand coalition) : 22 % - 60 %
  • Preferred Chancellor poll :
    • Olaf Scholz (SPD) : 76 % (+28)
    • Laschet (CDU) : 13 % (-7)
    • Both polls FGW, 30-Sep
  • Internal divisions within the CDU/CSU are beginning to emerge following the centre-right's worst election showing since WWII, and with CDU head Armin Laschet seen in such a negative light by voters (see poll above), the chances of him leading the next gov't seem to be waning by the day.
