Portugal Plans to Cover 93% of Demand by Renewables

Portugal is planning to meet 93% of its final energy consumption by renewables by 2030, compared to 61% in 2023, updated NECP draft show, cited by XM.

  • The country's renewable capacity will double to 42.9GW by 2030, with 12.4GW from wind power, including 2GW offshore and 20.8GW of solar. In 2023, it had 5.9 GW of onshore wind, 4GW of PV and a 25MW floating wind project.
  • The target for hydrogen is set at 3GW, down from 5.5GW set in the 2023 draft.
  • Its emissions target has remained unchanged – pointing to a 55% reduction by 2030 from 2005 levels.
