POWER: AUS Coal- France Exports Fall, SA Coal-German Double On Quarter

Australian coal exports to France are eyeing around a 9% fall in 3Q from the previous, while South African coal exports to Germany are on track to more than double, data from Marcura show.

  • South African coal exports to Germany have totaled around 136,400t so far this quarter, up from just 55,000t in 2Q and 155,800t in 1Q.
  • Despite this, South African coal exports to the EU fell to their lowest since at least 2017 in July at 3.15 mn/t, with August estimated at 3.43 mn/t compared to 1H average of 4.9 mn/t per month, data from Kepler showed on 20 August.
  • In contrast, French Australian coal imports are at around 435,600t in 3Q compared to 480,560t in the previous but above 161,000t in 1Q24.
