POWER: Germany to Begin Trialling Curtailment Mechanism in Oct

POWER

Germany will begin trialing its new “use instead of curtailment" mechanism on 1 Oct - which will allow large consumers to receive renewable power first that would otherwise be curtailed; however, no participants have registered, Tennet said, cited by PV magazine.

  • During the trial phase – which will last two years – a simplified flat-rate allocation procedure will be applied at a fixed price of €40.40/MWh – initially applied until December 2024.
  • 93% of last year's curtailments affected wind turbines in northern Germany, so the new mechanism is limited to eight relief regions.
  • After testing, curtailed capacities will be allocated in a competitive bidding tender- expected to begin in Oct 2026.
  • “Although interest is high, no participants have yet been prequalified in time for October 1”, 13k manager at Tennet Shawn Turner said in a webinar by Aurora Energy Research.
  • He anticipates the first allocations to begin in November.
