POWER: Italian Hydro Stocks Flip to Surplus to 5-Year Average

Italian hydropower reserves last week – calendar week 39 – increased by 0.09TWh to 3.20TWh, flipping to a surplus to the five-year average, Entso-E data showed. 

  • Stocks switched to a surplus to the five-year average of 0.08TWh last week, compared with a deficit of 0.10TWh the week before.
  • The deficit to 2023 levels also narrowed 0.20TWh, down from 0.32TW the week prior.
  • Power demand in Italy averaged 30.24GW last week, down from 30.35GW the week before.
  • Hydropower generation from pumped storage rose by 210MW last week to 654MW. Output from reservoirs was broadly stable last week at 603MW. Run-of-river generation rose by 344MW last week to 4.03MW.
  • Solar output in Italy last week increased by 309MW to 3.36GW. Wind output grew by 2.44GW to 3.32GW.
  • Gas-fired generation in Italy last week fell by 10.62GW to 12.72GW.
  • Precipitation in Torino – close to Italy’s hydro intensive region – last week totalled 29mm, above the seasonal average of 10.4mm.
  • Looking forward, ECMWF weather forecasts for Torino suggested precipitation at 33.1mm this week, above the seasonal average of 10.5mm.
  • Italy’s hydro balance is forecast to remain negative to end this week at -584GWh.
