POWER: Spanish Hydro Reseve Descend on Low Rainfall

Hydropower reserves in Spain declined to 48.6% of capacity as of the end of week 37, down from 49.3% of capacity the week before according to data from Spain’s Environmental Ministry.
- Hydropower output from reservoirs last week declined to 1.19GW from 1.4GW. Run-of-river generation was firm at 624MW compared to 682MW, while output from pumped storage edged down by around 100MW to 826MW.
- Precipitation in the hydro-intensive region of Huesca last week totalled around 0.00mm sharply down from 103.6mm the week prior.
- Spanish solar generation averaged 7.36GW over 9-15 Sept (week 37) – remaining firm from 7.22GW in week 36.
- Spanish nuclear generation last week increased slightly averaging 6.97GW up from 6.94GW in the previous week.
- Gas-fired generation in Spain last week declined to 4.16GW from 5.58GW in week 36 – which at the time noted a 1.72GW on-week decline.
- Onshore wind output in Spain sharply increased on the week – climbing to an average of 7.13GW from 4.9GW the week prior.
- Power demand in Spain last week averaged 25.67GW, down from 26.85GW the week prior.
- Looking ahead, the latest ECMWF forecasts suggested precipitation in Huesca will rise above the seasonal norm of around 1.2mm over 18-26 September – reaching as high as 13-16.5mm over 20-22 Sept.
- Mean temperatures in Madrid are forecast to be in line with 30-year norm of about 18C until 21 Sept before dropping below over 22-26 Sept.
Wind output in Spain for the remainder of this week is forecast between 1.3-7.63GW during base-load hours. Solar PV generation is forecast between 7.87-10.20GW during peak-load hours over the same period, SpotRenewables.
