POWER: Swiss Hydro Stocks Resume Increase

Swiss hydropower reserves increased last week by 1.4 percentage points to 83% of capacity as of 30 September, amid above-normal precipitation, BFE data showed.
- Stocks declined by 2.5 points the week prior.
- Reserves narrowed the deficit to the five-year average to 3.2 percentage points, down from 4.1 percentage points the week prior.
- The deficit to the long -term average – since 1997 – also narrowed to 3.4 points, down from 5.3 points the week before.
- Swiss hydropower generation last week edged down. Output from pumped storage declined by 102MW to 858MW. Run-of-river generation edged higher by 57MW to 267MW, while output from reservoirs declined by 166MW to 1.11GW.
- Nuclear generation in Switzerland last week edged down by 99MW to 2.83GW.
- Swiss hydropower generation last week increased by 333MW to 2.45GW.
- Nuclear generation last week was broadly stable at 2.93GW.
- Power demand last week in Switzerland averaged 6.96GW, slightly down from 7GW the week before.
- Precipitation last week in the hydro-intensive region of Sion last week totalled 185.4mm, well above the 30-year normal of 45mm.
- Looking ahead, forecasts for this week suggested precipitation in Sion will rise above the seasonal average to 89.3mm, compared with the average of 40.2mm.
The latest Swiss hydrobalance is forecast to remain positive and is forecast to end this week at +1.45TWh.
