POWER: Swiss Hydro Stocks See First Fall in Four Months

Swiss hydropower reserves last week declined by 1.2 percentage points to 83.6% of capacity as of 2 September, marking the first decline since the week ending 5 May amid below normal precipitation and higher hydropower generation due to higher demand, BFE data showed. 

  • Stocks rose by 1.2 points the week prior.
  • Reserves flipped to a deficit of 0.9 points to the five-year average, compared with a surplus of 1.2 points the week before.
  • Stocks also switched to a deficit to the long-term average – since 1997 – of 2.5 points, after being in line with the average the week prior.
  • Swiss power demand last week averaged 6.72GW, up from 6.56GW the week before.
  • Nuclear generation in Switzerland last week edged higher by 107MW on the week to 2.86GW.
  • Swiss hydropower generation last week increased to 3.51GW, up from 2.85GW the week prior, driven by higher output from reservoirs.
  • Precipitation last week in the hydro-intensive region of Sion totalled 3.3mm, compared with the 30-year normal of 38.03mm.
  • Looking ahead, forecasts for this week suggested precipitation in Sion will rise above normal to total 42.33mm, compared with the seasonal normal of 38.97mm.
  • The Swiss hydrobalance is forecast to be improving and to end this week +280GWh according to Bloomberg.
