POWER: Switzerland Request €53mn of Credit for Reserve Power Market

POWER

The Swiss Federal Council has requested a CHF 50mn (€53mn) credit facility from the domestic parliament to be used “if the plans for new reserve power plants are abandoned,” with the funds to be available from 2025, it said.

  • The Swiss supplementary power reserve – established in 2022 – is expected to be in force until the end of 2026, with the 250MW Birr, 36MW Cornaux, and 50MW Monthey units under contract until spring 2026.
  • As a result, the council opened a tender to eventually replace the units, but this was called off as the prices offered were “too high”, the council added.
  • The funds will be used to compensate if a contract for new reserve plants are concluded.
