The UK’s 2.2GW Ratcliffe-on Soar coal-fired plant – the last remaining unit in the UK- will shut down on 30 September, with the last batch of coal shipped to the plant being on Friday, BBC said.

  • Decommissioning will begin on 1 October and will take two years.
  • The unit was used during periods of cold snaps in 2022 and the heatwave in 2023.
  • The plant was first commissioned in 1967 and in 2008 was deemed one of the most polluting plants in the EU.
  • The UK has pledged to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2050.
