Prayuth Survives No-Confidence Vote Despite Rumours Of Plot To Unseat Him

THAILAND

Thailand's Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-Ocha and five of his ministers survived votes of confidence on Saturday amid continued street protests and infighting within the ruling party.

  • Prayuth secured the backing of 264 lawmakers, while 208 voted to oust him, falling short of the 242 threshold needed to carry the vote. The vote followed a four-day censure debate, used by the opposition to highlight the government's failures in handling the outbreak of Covid-19.
  • Other ministers who survived no-confidence votes include Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob, Labour Minister Suchat Chomklin, Digital Economy Minister Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn and Agriculture Minister Chalermchai Sri-on.
  • The opposition's arguments were overshadowed by rumours surrounding an alleged plot within the ruling coalition to unseat PM Prayuth, who denied that there were conflicts among ruling coalition leaders.
  • Pro-democracy protesters held daily rallies in the capital last week, demanding Prayuth's resignation, despite Covid-19 restrictions on public gatherings.
