Pres Starts Democracy Summit; Calls w/Ukraine, NATO; COVID Briefing

A busy day for US President Joe Biden gets underway shortly with his opening address to the plenary session of his two-day virtual 'Summit for Democracy'. Link to the livstream can be found here, with Biden set to talk at around 0800ET (1300GMT, 1400CET, 2200JST).

  • At 1230ET (1730GMT, 1830CET) he holds a phone call in the Oval Office with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to discuss the buildup of Russian troops on Ukraine's eastern border. Yesterday, Biden stated that US troops would not be deployed to the region.
  • At 1345ET (1845GMT, 1930CET) he hosts a call with the leaders of the eastern European NATO 'Bucharest Nine' countries (Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania and Slovakia) to update them on his call with Russian President Vladmir Putin earlier this week.
  • At 1530ET (2030GMT, 2130CET, 0530JST), Biden and VP Kamala Harris host a COVID-19 briefing with the White House COVID-19 response team to receive information on the Omicron variant.
