Free AccessPro-EU Leaders Sign Off On Coalition Pact, Confirm Tusk As Joint PM Candidate
The leaders of pro-EU parties hold a press conference to sign their coalition pact and confirm their readiness to take power on the eve of the national Independence Day. Civic Coalition leader and PM candidate Donald Tusk declares that the coalition is prepared to form government whenever they get a change to do so.
- Third Way's Szymon Holownia says that this is the first coalition agreement in Poland's modern history which has been made public. The coalition intends to be transparent about its priorities and the division of duties in the new government.
- The signing of the coalition deal comes after some reported tensions in the left-wing bloc, with the Left Together party adopting a resolution, which endorses Donald Tusk as PM candidate but says that the party's politicians will not enter his Cabinet.
- The deal confirms that the pro-EU coalition will command 248 seats in the 460-member lower house (Sejm), more than enough to pass legislation. The full text of the coalition agreement is available here (in Polish).
- On first glance, the agreement is rather generic and lacks details surrounding the operationalisation and implementation of general policy goals. Notably, the coalition reaffirmed its intention to hold senior officials from the outgoing administration to account for alleged breaches of the law.
- The coalition pact lists the following joint candidates for senior positions:
- Prime Minister: Donald Tusk
- First Deputy Prime Minister: Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz
- Deputy Prime Minister: Krzysztof Gawkowski
- Sejm Speaker: Szymon Holownia (2023 - 2025), Wlodzimierz Czarzasty (2025 - end of term)
- Senate Speaker: Malgorzata Kidawa-Blonska (2023 - 2025), unspecified Civic Coalition candidate (2025 - end of term)
