Putin Calls For One-Day Christmas Truce w/Ukraine From 1200 On 6 Jan

RUSSIA

Russian state-run IFX reporting that Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu implement a one-day Christmas truce to be observed with Ukraine starting at 1200 local time on 6 January to midnight on 7 January. This would cover the entirety of Christmas day in the Russian Orthodox Church calendar.

  • The Orthodox Church of Ukraine has allowed dioceses to hold Christmas services according the the Julian rather than Gregorian calendar this year (moving the date from 7 Jan to 25 Dec) in order to distance itself from the Russian Orthodox Church in Moscow, seen in Ukraine as a strong supporter of Putin's invasion.
  • The truce would be the first period without fighting since the invasion was launched in Feb 2022. Hostilities will resume on 8 January according to IFX.
