Putin Set To Address Nation On Ukraine Situation @2000 Local Time-Wires

RUSSIA

Wires and social media reporting that Russian President Vladimir Putin, alongside Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, are set to deliver a national address this evening on the situation in Ukraine. Speculation that speech could take place at 2000 local time (1300ET/1800BST/1800CET).

  • Comes as news has broken in last few hours that the breakaway Ukrainian regions of Luhansk and Donetsk, and the occupied Kherson region, will hold referendums from 23-27 September on joining the Russian Federation.
  • The last time Putin delivered such an address was on 24 Feb, when he first announced the 'special military operation'. Speculation rising that the Russian gov't could announce a general mobilisation following an effective counteroffensive by Ukrainian troops in the east of the country.
