Ramaphosa's Future Shrouded In Uncertainty Amid Ongoing Talks Between ANC Officials

SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa is on the lookout for the time of President Ramaphosa's touted address to the nation on the Phala Phala scandal after his spokesperson said "sufficient notice" will be given once the time has been confirmed.

  • TimesLive reports that it is not clear if the address will happen later today, since the ANC's National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting has been postponed until Friday. News24 had earlier reported that the meeting was delayed to make space for Ramaphosa's speech.
  • It remains unclear whether Ramaphosa will announce his resignation imminently as closed-doors meetings of ruling African National Congress officials are ongoing. TimesLive reports that Ramaphosa told his circle that he will make the final decision within the next 24 hours.
  • Some of the President's close allies are reportedly trying to persuade him to stay. According to TimesLive, "the better part of Thursday was spent trying to convince Ramaphosa to reverse his decision" to quit.
  • Speaking to the media at the ANC headquarters in Johannesburg, Former President Kgalema Morlanthe brushed away speculation that he could return as caretaker President should Ramaphosa step down.
