Reminder On Differences Between Establishment & Household Surveys

US DATA

Last month’s NFP report caused some confusion between the establishment and household surveys. See the below link for a run down of the differences. In short:

  • Survey sample of ~122k business and govt agencies, representing ~666k worksites
  • Multiple job holders counted for each job
  • Approx M/M chg for statistical significance at 90% confidence level: +/- 130k

Household survey: covers u/e and participation rates, using the household employment series.

  • Survey sample of ~60k households
  • Multiple job holders are counted only once
  • Approx 90% confidence interval: +/- 600k
