RENEWABLES: Germany’s Offshore Wind Expansion Wrong Priority: TenneT
RENEWABLES
Germany’s target to raise its offshore wind capacity to 70GW by 2045 is not the right priority due to limited space and high development costs, Tim Meyerjuergens, head of TenneT’s German operations, cited by Montel.
- “If we look at the German exclusive economic zone, the sea area for which Germany is responsible, then we have very little space out there. And at the same time, we have this ambitious goal of installing 70 GW offshore,” Meyerjuergens said.
- “…We should look at the energy that we can theoretically generate today – that’s about 200 TWh – set that as our actual goal and then optimise the area used”, he added.
- German offshore wind capacity stood at 9.02GW at the end of July, Bnetza data showed.
