RENEWABLES: Sweden’s Government to Support Wind Expansion

Sweden is planning to implement proposals to support the expansion of wind power by supporting municipalities, the government said in its budget press conference. 

  • The government announced that a compensation equivalent to what wind power pays in property tax for its facilities must be given as support to the municipalities.
  • Lobby group Svensk Vindenergi welcomed the government’s proposal.
  • “It is important to increase Sweden's electricity production in the short term in order to meet the industry's increased demand for electricity. The wind power industry thinks it is reasonable that the municipalities that contribute to the electrification get a share of the state cake”, it said.
  • The so-called municipal veto and the Swedish Armed Forces stopped almost all current wind power projects during the first half of 2024, the lobby group said in August.
