Rental Inflation Surges Again

  • Core CPI inflation of 0.51% M/M in February was about as close to consensus as could be expected at a reported level but had some stronger details within it.
  • Core services continue to pick up and within the rise was particularly strong tenants' rents of primary residence, which surprised again as they accelerated further to +0.57% M/M after surprising with +0.54% in January, at the time the strongest since 1992.
  • OER was closer to expectations at 0.45% M/M, with analyst notes seen by MNI beforehand generally in the low 0.4s.
