Reuters: Borrell Trip To China Cancelled By Beijing

CHINA-EU

MNI London: Reuters reporting that a trip to China by EU High Rep for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, scheduled to begin on Monday, July 10, has been cancelled by Beijing.

  • Bloomberg reports that the trip was planned as a key diplomatic engagement to, "figure out how to manage economic rivalry with China."
  • Borrell was scheduled to meet with Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang on Monday, to discuss "strategic issues," human rights, and the war in Ukraine, according to EU ambassador to Beijing, Jorge Toledo.
  • Toledo said at the World Peace Forum in Beijing on Sunday, “We want to engage with China in all issues, in our partnership, in our competition and in our systemic rivalry."
  • Bloomberg notes that, "Beijing is trying to persuade Europe to take a less hawkish stance than the US," but an informal trade dispute over high tech components and critical minerals has intensified in the past 24 hours with the Netherlands taking a firmer line than expected on the export of semiconductor lithography machines and China appearing to respond with export controls on two key minerals.
