GERMAN PRESS: Reuters has story form 'party source' stating that Secretary
General of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (AKK)
will not stand as the chancellor candidate for the party in the 2021 federal
election and will resign as party hear.
- Instead AKK will organise a process to choose a chancellor candidate and new
party head this summer.
- Story states that incumbent Chancellor Angela Merkel wanes AKK to remain as
defence minister.
- CDU has seen its support continue to decline in state elections held since AKK
took the reins. She is seen as a close ally of Merkel, with a similar policy
outlook. Many in the party supportive of a leader with a more conservative
agenda, seeking to win back votes from right-wing nationalist AfD.
- Next electoral test is in Hamburg on 23 Feb. Not a traditional stronghold for
CDU, so not the best gauge of reaction to the news.
