Romanian President Iohannis Nominates Former PM Ciolos To Form New Government

  • On October 5 2021, Romanian Prime Minister Florin Citu, who only took power 9 months ago, was ousted from his position after a vote of no-confidence.
  • The surge in political instability started last month when the reformist USR pulled its ministers out from the Cabinet due to disagreements over justice reforms and a local development spending plan.
  • 281 lawmakers voted in favor to carry the motion of confidence, far above the necessary 234 votes.
  • Surprisingly, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, who was expected to appoint a new PM to find a majority, gave former PM Dacian Ciolos a mandate to form a new government.
  • Ciolos, who recently won the leadership of Romania's liberal USR-PLUS, will then have 10 days to form a cabinet and win a confidence vote in parliament and potentially take the country out of the current on-going political crisis.
