Russia FM Lavrov: Everyone Wins If New START Treaty Extended

US-RUSSIA

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stated that 'everyone wins' if the US and Russia agree to extend the New START (Strategic Arms Reductions Treaty) without any preconditions.

  • Lavrov also says that the extension of the treaty may have to wait until the political situation in the US is 'more settled'.
  • New START, signed in 2010 and coming into effect in 2011, expires on 5 February 2021, with the option to extend to 2026.
  • US President-Elect Joe Biden is due to be inaugurated on January 20, leaving just over two weeks for the new administration to agree to an extension to the treaty if it wishes to.
  • Many within the US gov't and military do not wish to extend New START, but re-negotiated it. The Congressional Research Service in its report, 'The New START Treaty: Central Limits and Key Provisions', gives the following impetus for some to seek re-negotiation as it could give "...the opportunity to press Russia to include limits on its new types of long-range nuclear delivery systems and to accept limits on shorter-range, nonstrategic delivery vehicles. But this approach envisions a more complicated treaty and could take years to complete the negotiations."
