RUSSIA: Russian Coal Exports Through Seaports Plunge in 2024

  • President Biden will allow Ukraine to launch US-provided munitions against military targets inside a limited area of Russia, Bloomberg report, overcoming concern that any such move could provoke a wider war with the West.
  • Russian coal exports through seaports plunged almost 20% y/y to 50.5m tonnes in the first four months of 2024, Kpler data cited by Vedomosti show. Shipments fell through ports in the south and northwest, as well as the Far East. However, the newspaper note that exports to Asia could improve later this year on the back of higher prices.
  • Defense Minister Belousov will take part in a meeting in Kazakhstan with counterparts from the Collective Security Treaty Organization while Foreign Minister Lavrov participates in the Foreign Ministry’s Business Council to discuss cooperation with BRICS states.
