Russian Urals STS Transfers Pause in July

Russian Urals ship to ship transfers fell sharply to only transfer in July because of a mix of more regulatory scrutiny, less-expensive freight, and the fact that Russia doesn’t need to keep ice-strengthened ships near its western ports during summer according to Bloomberg and shipping officials.

  • There has been just one Urals grade STS transfer in July according to Bloomberg tanker tracking data.
  • In May the EU banned ships from its ports if they are involved in illegal STS transfers. Not all transfers, including of Russian oil, break EU rules, especially if the cargo cost less than $60/bbl.
