Sales of LNG Powered Trucks and Ships Boosted by Lower Gas Prices

ENERGY

Lower natural gas prices and the expected global supply boost in the coming years is supporting sales of LNG power trucks and ships in a shift from oil, according to Bloomberg.

  • A third of new heavy-duty trucks sold in China in April was powered by LNG, an increase from just one in eight a year earlier. Sales of LNG for vessels in Singapore were 10 times higher in April than a year earlier.
  • EVs and LNG-powered trucks will replace about 10% to 12% of China’s diesel and gasoline consumption this year, according to a forecast from China National Petroleum Corp.’s Economics & Technology Research Institute in March.
  • LNG is also becoming more cost-competitive in shipping amid a drive for owners to decarbonize from the International Maritime Organization and various governments.
  • A growing environmental focus on LNG is a risk to the increasing trend despite being cleaner than oil.
