Scholz-Gov't To Review Military Export Rules; Could Boost Ukraine Army

GERMANY

Comments from German Chancellor Olaf Scholz hitting wires regarding the country's actions regarding the conflict in Ukraine and his gov'ts views on Russia.

  • Scholz: 'The German gov't is ready to review its reservations with regard to military export rules for joint defence projects.'
  • This would mark a major shift in gov't policy. During the course of the war in Ukraine, Germany has come in for criticism from Russia hawks for falling short in its delivery of military equipment when compared to other NATO allies. Onerous export bureaucracy has been blamed in some part for the slow provision of weaponry. Changes to this system that allow for swifter export of more advanced equipment could prove a major boost to Ukraine.
  • Scholz states that Putin's Russia 'currently poses the greatest threat to NATO', and that 'we'll have to get used to the fact that Putin's Russia will define itself as an adversary to us, NATO, and the EU for the foreseeable future'.
  • Scholz due to meet with Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi in Berlin later today.
