Schumer Courts Republicans To Prevent Government Shutdown

US

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has written a letterto Senate colleagues warning that the Senate must prevent, “House Republican extremists from forcing a government shutdown, adding, "the only way to avoid a shutdown is through bipartisanship."

  • Schumer’s letter praises both Democrat and Republican Senate appropriators for passing all 12 annual spending bills, a clear contrast with their House counterparts who have only managed to pass one of their 12 bills.
  • Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has indicated he is aligned with Schumer on spending: “The speaker and the president reached an agreement... to set the spending levels for next year. The House then turned around and passed spending levels that were below that level… [T]hat’s not going to be replicated in the Senate.”
  • Conservative House Republicans are unlikely to accept Senate spending priorities without major concessions on policy. Prominent conservative Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) said yesterday: "I will not vote to fund the government if Congress doesn’t do this: - Impeachment Inquiry vote on Joe Biden - Defund Biden’s weaponization of government - Eliminate all COVID vaccine and mandates - No funding for the war in Ukraine."
