Shipping Industry Urges Action to Stop Red Sea Attacks: Argus

The international chamber of shipping (ICS) has called for urgent action to stop “unlawful attacks” on commercial shipping in the Red Sea by the Houthis, according to Argus.

  • "This is an unacceptable situation, and these attacks must stop now," the ICS said. "We call for states with influence in the region to safeguard our innocent seafarers and for the swift de-escalation of the situation in the Red Sea."
  • The Iran-backed Houthi rebels began attacking commercial ships in the Red Sea in response to the breakout of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.
  • To date, the Houthis have sun the Handysize bulk carrier Rubymar on March 4 and the bulk carrier Tutor on June 12.
  • ICS added that crew members from the cargo vessel Galaxy Leader and Containership MSC Aries are still being held captive.
  • The combined flow of crude and products via the Suez Canal is down 34% on the month and 65% on the year, according to Kpler. Around 92% of southbound oil traffic is of Russian origin
