Singapore's Elections Department (ELD) said that about 74% of eligible voters participated in the ongoing presidential election as of 08:00BST/15:00SGT, with polling stations set to close at 13:00BST/20:00SGT.
- The role of Singapore's presidency is largely reduced to ceremonial and diplomatic functions, with some very limited executive powers. As a result, the outcome is unlikely to have much direct impact on policymaking.
- The election draws some attention due to being Singapore's fist contested presidential race in more than a decade, giving the voters an opportunity to express their views on the PAP party, which has ruled the country since 1959.
- The leading candidate is Tharman Shanmugaratnam, a veteran PAP politician, who previously served in multiple high-profile public positions. He is up against financier Ng Kok Song and entrepreneur Tan Kin Lian.
- Outgoing President Halimah Yacob decided not to seek re-election, paving the way for Tharman to represent the PAP in this year's election. Many will watch Tharman's vote share as an indication of public support for the governing party.
