SNP Westminster Leader Election Today, Aims To Boost IndyRef2 Chances

SCOTLAND

Philip Sim at the BBC on the Scottish National Party (SNP)'s selection of a new Westminster leader today:

  • "The SNP is electing a new Westminster leader today, with a contest between Stephen Flynn and Alison Thewliss. Group leadership might seem like a bubble story and indeed the campaign is entirely internal, but it strikes me there’s one key reason why all of this matters more widely."
  • "If the SNP is to treat the next general election as a de facto referendum, then people won’t be putting a cross in a box next to the word Yes - they’ll be voting for Stephen Flynn, or Alison Thewliss, [...] etc etc. If that election is to be the vehicle for the constitutional question then these MPs are going to be right on the front line."
  • "So who they are and who leads them - and what the latter says about the former, and indeed their unity as a group - is going to matter like never before."
The contest, taking place in a secret ballot, pits the more combative, insurgent Flynn-Black ticket against the Thewliss-McDonald team, viewed as a 'continuity candidate' of First Minister Nicola Sturgeon. Results expected around 19090-2000GMT. Latest opinion poll (26-27 Nov, Redfield and Wilton) showed 49% of respondents in favour of independence, 45% opposed, and 5% undecided.
